About

Founded in 1999, Public Eye is a Section 21 company, formed by a collection of Cape Town-based artists and cultural activists to initiate and manage art projects in the public arena with the aim of enriching the cultural life of the city and the country.

Our aims and mission statement

To develop a greater profile for public art in South Africa

Alongside other aspects of transformation in South Africa, we hold that cultural and creative development are vital and important to our emerging society. We aim to create platforms to allow individuals and communities to empower themselves. We also intend to develop new audiences for existing museums and galleries.

To co-ordinate and facilitate art-based projects to this end

Public Eye aims to initiate and manage its own projects and also to support and implement proposals from other individuals and organisations.

To identify and explore public space as a place in which to make and engage with these projects

Public Eye aims to enrich cultural life in South Africa by taking all forms of art into public spaces.

To align ourselves with initiatives that relate to our aims both here and abroad

We aim to draw on the experience of organisations, communities and artists in South Africa and in other countries to help us re-imagine city spaces.
