On December 1, a ceremony marking the start of World Parliament of Religions took place on an open field in District Six, Cape Town. Rev. John Oliver of St Mark's Anglican church commissioned Public Eye to produce four sculptures, each representing one of the four elements. Positioned on the cardinal points, these formed part of the opening ceremony.
