too Channel Too is the sequel to Channel, which occurred at the AVA Gallery in May 1999. This event received acclaim in both local and national press and brought Johannesburg based artist Stephen Hobbs and Pretoria based artist Minnette Vari to Cape Town.
Channel Too with the support of the French Institute begins with an initial
phase of internet based conferences and exchanges, during which artists
discuss their own work, backgrounds and techniques with one another.
|
The following hands on collaborative phase will take place at the Michaelis School of Art. Works created at the end of this process will be exhibited at the Association for Visual Arts Gallery, in Church Street, Cape Town. The exhibition will run from July 10 through July 22 June.
Local artists will benefit through collaborating with renowned French new
media artist Valery Grancher. This will stimulate new insights for artists
and provide opportunities for further exchanges locally and
internationally.

This project will broaden the video art and new media debate and allow new insight into these mediums. As this project is happening in partnership with the new digital media department at the Michaelis School of Art, artists will have access to high tech video equipment and the expertise of internationally respected artist and associate Professor Malcolm Payne. Through various mediums i.e. Video, internet, web cameras and other digital media the project aims to stimulate interaction and collaboration between the artists from different backgrounds. |
This will help in fostering a broader understanding of technology based art forms and their role in modern digital based society. The initial phase of the project will make use of the internet as a dynamic tool for exchanging and pooling resources and ideas. The second phase will be a face to face interaction where the physical components of the event would are produced i.e. video editing and designing of the exhibition area and specific web pages. |
